The Declaration of Independence
The day America said, “We’ll be our own country.”

Everybody is born equal, with rights no one can take away.

A long time ago, America was ruled by a faraway king. The people here did not get a say. That did not feel fair.

So they wrote a letter to the whole world. It said: we are going to be our own country now, and here is why.

The most famous line says that all people are created equal. Everyone is born with rights — like life, and freedom, and the chance to be happy.

Nobody gets to take those rights away. A government’s only job is to protect them. If it won’t, the people can change it.
